Beyond The Leotard: Dress Code Etiquette For All Classes

Good to know:

  • Only leotards, shirts, pants, & leggings imprinted with the PDW logo may be worn for class.

  • Additional PDW logo wear is occasionally offered as optional supplements to a dancer's wardrobe.

  • Shoes are not included as part of the uniform and must be purchased separately. We stock all shoes for your convenience. Dance shoes should not be worn outside.

What about other apparel or accessories not mentioned in the dress code chart?

Dancers of any age may not wear:

  • Undergarments that show - This adds to rather than reduces modesty issues.
    • Allow the leotard and tights to provide coverage and support alone. The uniform leotard is thick, supportive, and modestly cut.
      OR
    • Wear dance undergarments that do not show, including straps and back, to provide additional support.
      • Dance bras, briefs, or nude leotards designed to hide entirely under a leotard are an excellent choice for dancers who desire additional support.
      • All dance undergarments come in a range of skin-tone colors.
      • Since undergarment needs and desires vary from student to student, the studio does not provide undergarments or stock these items.
Dance Bras Many styles are available; choose one that fits under your leotard or costume without showing.
Dance Briefs Dance underwear is specifically cut to fit under a leotard without being seen. Ideal for female dancers who wish to have additional coverage during their period.
Nude Leotards

Skin tone leotards that are ideal for additional all-over coverage and support. These are ideal as a base layer under costumes.

Dancers who have a costume change during a performance must wear a nude leotard. Some costumes also require a nude leotard.

  • Jewelry - Only small pierced jewelry is allowed.
    • No necklaces, watches, bracelets, anklets, dangling earrings, large hair accessories, etc.

  • Warmups/Coverups - Anything other than the class uniform must be removed before class begins, including legwarmers, jackets, sweaters, skirts, trashbag shorts, etc.

Why Is A Dress Code Important?

A dress code...

1) Helps young dancers understand that they are attending a structured class (compared to unstructured playtime).

2) Unifies dancers by identifying them as a part of their studio and level.

3) Allows teachers to see the dancer's lines and establish proper technique.

4) Ensures that clothing is not distracting during class.

5) Ensures that the dancer is appropriately covered.

6) Provides each dancer with matching apparel for performances.

7) Saves parents' time and money. At Pure Dance Works, everything is provided at the studio, and dancers are not trying to keep up with the latest dancewear trends.
