THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS | Pantomime

Sparkle dancers know that we don’t talk while dancing on stage. And yet, dancers often tell a story. How can you tell a story without words, an astute Sparkle student may ask? 

Pantomime is the answer.

Dance has a rich history of pantomime, specifically in the ballet realm. 

Sparkle ballet students are learning all about traditional ballet pantomime this month. 

One of the pantomimes Sparkle ballet students are learning this month is “I love you.” 

It’s very easy to learn and understand, making it the perfect introduction to pantomime. 

I: Touch your fingertips to your chest
 

Love: Cross your wrists over your heart
 

You: Point to the person you love, or show that you love a group of people by gracefully sweeping your hand in front of several people. 

Even our youngest Sparkle students pick up on this one quickly. 

Now the trick is learning to perform the pantomime without saying the words :). This exercise in impulse control helps dancers more fully comprehend that the dancers communicate with action, not words. 

Tap, musical theatre, and hip-hop Sparkle students don’t use traditional ballet pantomime, of course. They are working on expressing their character, emotions, and actions in a BIG way so that they are clear to the audience.
