CLASSES BEGIN MARCH 16
We trust that your dancer is excited to kick off the Spring Sparkle Season this week! Our crew is bursting with excitement about everything we have planned for our dancers this season.
You should have received a detailed class confirmation email recently. If you have questions about your child’s class, please reply to this email and we’ll be happy to help.
We also sent a “pre-season” Navigator last week containing a lot of need-to-know info that will be particularly helpful to parents of new students.
If you missed it, you can click HERE to read it in the Parent Portal. Once you’re logged in, you’ll see “The Navigator Weekly Email Updates” right at the top.
STUDENT IDS
Student IDs are an essential part of a Pure Dance Works dancer’s wardrobe.
Please have your dancer wear their Student ID to class for the first three weeks to help everyone learn names.
After that, please keep your dancers’ Student ID handy, because they are only replaced every few years. Student IDs serve as a dancer’s security tag at the theater every performance in December and June.
Tiny Dancers: If needed, you can reduce the length of young dancers’ lanyards by adding a knot so the name badge hangs in front of their torsos.
Lanyards display the student’s name badge as well as the dancer’s Pure Dance Works accomplishments. Be sure to attach any pins or tags your dancer receives to their lanyard.
Missing Items? If your dancer’s Student ID gets lost, you can pick up a replacement at the front desk for a nominal fee.
THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS | Pantomime
Sparkle dancers know that we don’t talk while dancing on stage. And yet, dancers often tell a story. How can you tell a story without words, an astute Sparkle student may ask?
Pantomime is the answer.
Dance has a rich history of pantomime, specifically in the ballet realm.
Sparkle ballet students are learning all about traditional ballet pantomime this month.
One of the pantomimes Sparkle ballet students are learning this month is “I love you.”
It’s very easy to learn and understand, making it the perfect introduction to pantomime.
I: Touch your fingertips to your chest
Love: Cross your wrists over your heart
You: Point to the person you love, or show that you love a group of people by gracefully sweeping your hand in front of several people.
Even our youngest Sparkle students pick up on this one quickly.
Now the trick is learning to perform the pantomime without saying the words :). This exercise in impulse control helps dancers more fully comprehend that the dancers communicate with action, not words.
Tap, musical theatre, and hip-hop Sparkle students don’t use traditional ballet pantomime, of course. They are working on expressing their character, emotions, and actions in a BIG way so that they are clear to the audience.
Bonus Content!
Your Sparkle dancer may enjoy this video explaining a conversation that occurs through pantomime in the ballet Swan Lake.
BON VOYAGE!
