New This Year: Preseason Jazz Intensive | August 3-7
An exciting new training opportunity for dancers in Ripple 3 and higher will debut just before the start of the ‘26-‘27 Season.
August 3–7, Pure Dance Works will offer an evening Jazz Intensive designed to springboard all intermediate through advanced students into the new season.
Not a Jazz Student? | Hip hop, tap and ballet students may have noticed the influence that jazz has on these styles. The Jazz Intensive will provide the opportunity to discover more about jazz and begin to build solid jazz skills that will support their overall dance development.
Jazz Students | Jazz students will find that the Jazz Intensive is an excellent way to rebuild strength, refine technique, master a step they are “on so close” to, and catapult them into fall classes feeling in shape, prepared and confident.
Pure Performance Company | The Jazz Intensive is included & required for Pure Performance Company (PPC) members. Strategically scheduled just before PPC auditions, the week provides focused, consecutive classes to help dancers audition and perform with confidence at their highest level.
Thinking About Jazz or PPC? | For dancers who are curious about adding jazz to their training and/or joining the Pure Performance Company, the Jazz Intensive provides a clear understanding of the level of technical training that adequately supports other styles and prepares dancers for Pure Performance Company.
Save the Date | More details and registration information will be shared soon. For now, please save the dates: August 3–7.
THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS | Energy
One of the movement concepts Ripple students are currently focusing on is energy, particularly smooth and sharp energy.
The energy of any movement can be smooth or sharp. Many dance movements are meant to be one or the other.
For example, a plié is supposed to be a smooth movement. It’s a bending and stretching of the knees that never stops. If the movement pauses, it becomes sharp.
A piqué is a sharp “pricking” of the floor with a straight leg and pointed foot; the upward movement is fast and stops abruptly. If the movement doesn’t stop, it loses its sharpness.
These are ballet examples, but every dance style has movements that must contain the correct energy to be performed correctly.
It can be helpful to consciously experiment with performing a movement with the opposite energy to gain a deeper awareness of what is correct.
Focusing on energy as you create movement can also be inspirational. Sometimes an intentionally placed unexpected energy produces an interesting aesthetic result.
BON VOYAGE!
