THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS | Body Shapes
Curvy and straight are fairly simple concepts for young children to understand. We often work on making our arms and legs curvy or straight in dance.
Proper execution usually takes a lot of training, but you know a dancer is internalizing their lessons when you see strong, straight legs or nicely curved arms at work.
This month Sparkle students are also working on symmetrical and asymmetrical shapes. Now that is an impressive vocabulary for a 6-year-old, let alone a 3-year-old, but they are all proud to say and describe these big new words.
The dancers love learning how to produce symmetrical and asymmetrical shapes. Symmetrical means both sides of the body look the same, and asymmetrical means each side is doing something different.
A favorite end-of-class activity is “Shape Museum.”
Dancers delight in freezing in a symmetrical or asymmetrical shape based on pictures laid out on the floor.
Even more, they struggle to contain their giggles as the teacher roams through the “museum,” admiring all the beautiful statues.
Magically, when the teacher turns her back to read an interesting sign on the wall, all the statues change into a new location and shape!
BON VOYAGE!
