Primary Ballet 1 (5's Ballet)

A weekly, one hour Primary Ballet 1 class designed for children who are 5 on October 1 of the school year in which class begins.

Students perform primary ballet skills that are just right for a 5 year-old's developmental abilities. As compared to a pre-ballet class, primary dancers' increased muscle strength and control, along with greater cognitive capabilities, mean that these dancers work turned out a majority of the time, start to learn more complex arm positions and movements, and enjoy learning more intricate group movement patterns.  Students continue to increase in their knowledge and understanding of  French terminology. Exercises to increase musical awareness, balance, agility and gross motor development continue to be practiced.  Because five's easily relate the world of pretend play to real life, skills are often introduced through imaginative story lines. The intentional use of props such as ribbon rings and scarves foster creativity and artistry, & provide a deeper understanding of concepts presented in class, such as sharp and smooth movement. All of this adds up to developmentally appropriate ballet technique for 5 year-olds presented in a fun, kid-friendly atmosphere.

An important part of any class for early elementary students involves learning good dance manners...taking turns, keeping quiet (including tap shoes!) when necessary, and listening to and following directions.

This class is designed with the typical developmental abilities of six year olds in mind. Children must be 6 by October 1 AND enrolled in 6's Ballet* to enroll in 6's Tap Add-On. Because the curriculum progresses incrementally from August to May and is based on the age and corresponding developmental abilities of the dancers in fall, strict adherence to the age limit is enforced.
*Alternativley, 6's may enroll in an add-on class if they are enrolled in any other standard-length (60 minute) class for 5's (ballet, tap or musical theatre).

Dress code for 6's is an eggplant pinch front tank leotard, ballet pink dance tights and tan Mary Jane tap shoes. All hair must be secured in a bun or pony tail.

-->Want a full-length class? Standard 60 minute classes in this style are also offered and do not require an additional enrollment.
Preparatory Ballet (7's Ballet)

A weekly 75 minute class that has been created to transition 7 year old dancers into the study of classical ballet. Students must be seven by October 1 of the school year in which class begins.

Preparatory Ballet is structured in a format similar to a traditional classical ballet class; however, in keeping with the developmental needs of children in the seven-year age range, this class is a combination of traditional formal technique training and a creative approach to learning movement. It is in this level the young dancers begin training at the barre. As compared to primary level ballet classes, preparatory students are exposed to more complex and intricate positions, movements and patterns that are a part of the study of classical ballet.

This class meets once per week, though students are VERY strongly encouraged to take two classes per week by dual enrolling in a second Prepartory Ballet class and/or a Primary Ballet 2 class. At this age, students benefit greatly from two classes per week in order to facilitate proper skill development. Attending class twice per week also enhances muscle memory, a vital asset to a developing ballet dancer.

This class is designed with the typical physical, social, emotional and cognitive developmental abilities of 7 year olds in mind. Children must be 7 by October 1 to enroll in Shining Stars Preparatory Ballet. Because the curriculum is based on the age and corresponding developmental abilities of children in the fall and progresses incrementally throughout the school year, strict adherence to the age requirement is enforced.

Dress code is a black tank pinch front leotard, ballet pink dance tights and pink leather ballet shoes. Hair must be secured in a bun.

Ballet I

Ballet I is the first level of classical ballet technique, encompassing students who are beginners through lower intermediate level. Students age 8 (by 10/1) and older are developmentally ready to being the study of classical ballet. Classical ballet skills must be built up from the beginning; just as a student must learn basic computation before taking Algebra. Therefore, all beginning ballet students age 8+ need to start in this class, regardless of age. It is not unusual for students to stay in the same level for more than one year and this is not an indication of a lack of progress. Ballet IV is our highest, most advanced level, and most students will be in their mid-teens before they are ready for advanced classes.

The class meets once per week, though students at this level are VERY strongly encouraged to take at least one additional weekly ballet class in either another Ballet I class or Preparatory Ballet Class to facilitate good muscle memory and overall skill advancement. Enrolling in multiple classes per week is very helpful in progressing to the next level more quickly.

Because the curriculum is based on the age and corresponding developmental abilities of, strict adherence to the minimum age requirement is enforced.

Dress code is a black tank pinch front black leotard, pink dance tights and pink leather or canvas ballet shoes. A short black dance skirt is optional. Hair must be in a neat bun.

Ballet IB/II

Ballet IB/II is an advanced beginner / lower intermediate level classical ballet class. Students may be older beginners (11+), or must be at least 9 (by 10/1) and have at least 1 year of recent ballet experience and have attained lower intermediate classical ballet skills. Students will be assessed the first month of class to assure proper level placement.

On average, most Ballet IB/II students are older than 9 and have more than one year of ballet experience. It is not unusual for students to stay in the same level for more than one year, and this is not an indication of a lack of progress. Ballet IV is our highest, most advanced level, and most students will be in their mid-teens with several years of ballet before they are ready for advanced classes.

Students are VERY strongly encouraged to take at least one additional weekly ballet class in order to facilitate proper muscle memory and skill advancement. Ballet I is the recommended second class. Taking multiple ballet classes weekly is the best way to ensure that progression to the next level is happening as quickly as possible.

Ballet IB/II students wear the Revolution black tank pinch front black leotard, pink dance tights and pink leather or canvas ballet shoes. A short solid black dance skirt is optional. No bras may show under the leotard, and only small pierced jewelry is allowed in class. Hair must be in a neat bun.

Ballet III

Ballet III is an upper intermediate/lower advanced level class for students ages 10 and up (by 10/1) who have at least 2 years of recent ballet experience and have attained an upper intermediate skill level in classical ballet. Students will be assessed the first month of class to ensure proper level placement for maximum personal development.

On average, most Ballet III students are older than 10 and have more than two years of ballet experience. It is not unusual for students to stay in the same level for more than one year, and this is not an indication of a lack of progress. Ballet IV is our highest, most advanced level, and most students will be in their mid-teens with several years of ballet before they are ready for advanced classes.

In order to make expected progress, students at this level are VERY strongly encouraged to attend at least two ballet classes per week in order to review proper skill execution frequently and to train their muscle memory consistently. Ballet II is the ideal co-enrollment class for this level, though any of our Ballet I classes are acceptable as well. Students at this level who are at least 12 years old may inquire about an assessment for pointe readiness. Pointe is an additional 45 minute class weekly and requires teacher recommendation.

Students in Ballet III wear a black tank pinch front leotard, pink dance tights, and pink canvas or leather ballet shoes. A short black dance skirt is optional. Hair must be in a neat bun.

Ballet IV

Ballet IV is for students ages 11 and up (by 10/1) who have at least 3-4 years of recent ballet experience and have attained an advanced skill level in classical ballet. Students will be assessed the first month of class to ensure proper level placement for maximum personal development.

On average, most Ballet IV students are much older than 10 and have more than 3 or 4 years of ballet experience.

Pre-pointe students wear pink canvas or leather ballet shoes. Pointe students wear professionally fitted pointe shoes. (Standing Ovation Performance Apparel fits and sells pointe shoes.
