FAQ

What can I expect?

You can expect to be a part of a positive place that is run professionally and trains students progressively. Students are taught to be polite in every class, and above all, everything we do is pure on purpose. There are no concerns here about music, apparel, costumes, or moves being inappropriate. Everything we do is designed to engage, encourage and inspire our students to be a positive force for good in our community. We exist to delight students with classes that they love, help them discover the world of the arts and what they want to pursue within it, and to develop them into proficient artists and leaders who will in turn inspire others through the arts platform.

What if I’ve never taken a class before?

Not to worry! Beginners are welcome here, and you or your child will flourish in our developmentally-based classes that utilize professionally designed curricula guaranteed to move every student from square one to whatever end point you desire.

For kids ages 3-6, students are grouped according to the year of their birth, so 3’s are with 3’s, 4’s with 4’s, etc. The beauty of this design is that everyone is developmentally on the same page. They can all be expected to do the same things physically, whether they have been dancing for a couple of years or are brand new. (Of course, those who have dancing longer will have a more solid grasp of the material, but newbies will be able to do what is asked and will catch up to their peers soon enough.) Developmental training means we don’t push young children beyond what their body is ready to do at any given age. Rather, they are carefully trained within the safe boundaries of their developmental abilities. This extends to social, emotional and cognitive developmental abilities as well - each area of a child’s development is taken into consideration and intentionally nurtured in every class.

Students ages 7 and up are carefully placed in the best level for their age and experience level, ensuring that they are appropriately challenged without being overwhelmed. Older beginners (generally ages 10+) who are motivated may begin in a level that consists of students mostly younger than they are, but may inquire about taking private lessons to help them move up to a higher level more quickly. With or without private lessons, new students who are older REALLY benefit from taking class multiple times per week. Your progress will be exponentially faster than if you take class just 60-75 minutes once a week. Taking multiple ballet classes each week will allow you to progress the most in the shortest amount of time, regardless of what other styles you may be taking. This is not to say that beginners will become intermediate or advanced dancers overnight - Dance training takes time and effort. When there are 4 levels of a style, students often remain in one level for 2-3 years before moving up.  But we are committed to helping older beginners who are motivated and are willing to do what it takes to learn by providing excellent training and plenty of individual feedback.

What is Leap ‘N Learn?

Kids love to play. Parents want to know that their kids are learning and progressing. Everyone is happy at Pure Dance Works, because we know that play is a child’s job; it’s how they learn.

Children ages 3-6 are delighted to come to dance when they discover the imaginative story lines woven throughout their classes. Young students develop a solid foundation in dance technique and artistry while pretending to be princesses or princes, flamingos, fairies, baby birds, zebras, elephants and mice, and so much more.

The emphasis on using our Dancer Manners in every class means that students are respectful and polite, which results in a maximized use of classroom time.

Progressive, developmentally-based lesson plans are used in every classroom, every week, by every trained and certified Leap ‘N Learn teacher, guaranteeing that our students are being nurtured physically, cognitively, socially and emotionally throughout their years as a Leap ‘N Learn student. The foundation being laid during these years produces well-rounded, competent dancers who are prepared to achieve success in their ongoing dance training. You can click here to learn more about the International Leap ‘N Learn Program.

How do I choose the correct class for my child?

For students ages 3-7, your child's age on October 1 of the current school year determines his or her placement in class for the school year. Therefore, choose the appropriate age group for your child's class based on his or her age as of Oct. 1. Our curriculum for ages 3-6 is specifically designed for the developmental abilities and progression of each age group over a 9 month period. For this reason, the age requirements are strictly adhered to. For parents of the child with the oh-so-close early October birthday, it may help to realize that the cut-off date is a grace period that runs from the time classes begin in late August until October 1. In almost all cases, students benefit from being the oldest in a class rather than the youngest, especially when they are new to dance.

Students aged 7 and over should be placed in classes based age, experience, and attained skill level. Please read Class Descriptions to determine the most likely fit for your child. If you need help, give us a call at 637-9660 or email info@puredanceworks.com. Students may be reassigned to a different class level after assessment to ensure their continued success.

How long are weekly classes during the school year?

Classes range from 30 to 75 minutes based on age and dance style. Most classes are 60 minutes long.

What is an average class size?

All class sizes are kept small to ensure that each student gets adequate attention. In addition, small class sizes help to facilitate a calm learning environment for our young students. Assistants are present in most classes for children ages 7 and under.
